Google Search Console: Your Free SEO Goldmine
Google gives you free data about how people find your website. Here is how to use it — explained simply.
Google Search Console (GSC) is the most powerful free SEO tool available — and most Kenyan businesses do not even know it exists. It shows you exactly how Google sees your website, what people search for to find you, and what you need to fix.
What Google Search Console Shows You
Once you have verified your website, GSC gives you access to: search queries, clicks and impressions, average position, click-through rate (CTR), index coverage, mobile usability, and sitemap status.
How to Set Up Google Search Console
- Go to search.google.com/search-console
- Sign in with your Google account
- Click "Add Property" and enter your website URL
- Verify ownership (easiest: add an HTML tag or use Google Analytics)
- Wait 2-7 days for data to appear
The 3 Most Important Reports
1. Performance Report (Search Results)
This shows you which keywords bring people to your site. Look for keywords with high impressions but low clicks, keywords you did not know you ranked for, and keywords where you are on page 2 (positions 11-20).
2. Index Coverage Report
This shows you which pages Google can find. Look for pages with errors, pages that should not be indexed, and new pages that are not indexed yet.
3. Mobile Usability Report
This shows you if your website has mobile issues. Since Google uses mobile-first indexing, fixing mobile issues is critical.
How Often to Check GSC
Check your Search Console once a week. Look at total clicks and impressions, check your top queries, scan for errors, and check mobile usability. That is 10 minutes a week.
